In my ten year career of Internet citizen, I have registered to thousands if not millions websites. I had to think of thousands different passwords (to use the same is insecure) and I really do not remember them. But I have no problem with that because I do not remember websites names or urls either…
How many registrations do you really need on the Internet?
Please think about it before reading further.
The correct answer is one – that’s email. I know it sounds strange; email was invented so last century and still nobody could replace it. It’s impossible to live without email. Will someday email be replaced with better service?
What might you need without email? Well, maybe some chat or social network to keep with your folks? You may also need some of professional networks to share your works or professional tools to do real work. That’s it.
So, why the hell (almost) every website in the world ask you to register (to do something)? Why can’t they use existing methods? There are plenty of ways to do this: gmail, facebook, twitter… You name it. So, why websites makers still make their own registration forms? Wouldn’t it be easier for users to use the one they already use? Wouldn’t it attract more users to the site if there were no registration?
If I come to the new website which I never visited in the past (I do it very often) and it ask me to register, I just go away.
If you really want me to try your website, use twitter login. (I have no facebook, because I got deleted for no apparent reason, but that’s another story).
Sometimes I find twitter login on sites. And most of the times I end up very disappointed. Not because the site is bad, but because of the registration process. You choose twitter login and the next thing you see three fields: enter your name, enter your email, enter your password. WTF?! This is twitter login, not registering for bank account. Why the hell you do this shit? Every time you do this, god kills a bit in your hard drive. So next time please do it better.
Respect your users, make it easy for them. They are the reason why you build website in the first place. Or are you building websites for the wrong reasons?
